Hi-M8 Mental Health Drama Illustration at Opera House

PROJECT: EXPRESS YOURSELF

AWARDED BY/PARTNERED WITH: OPERA HOUSE, BELFAST CITY COUNCIL, AND BBC CHILDREN IN NEED

AIM

The project’s goal is to provide young people with an opportunity to demonstrate their acting and dancing abilities. With the assistance of two facilitators, it gave the young people the chance to collaborate and quickly generate something worthwhile.

OVERVIEW

There were three sessions throughout the project. The young people involved in this study stated that their focus was on youth mental health, and they participated in several icebreaker activities related to this topic. Ultimately, they decided to have a performance drama in which each person shared a story about a mental health issue and how it affected them.

Peer pressure, racism in action, abuse, gangsterism, not being heard at home, and a host of other problems that plagued them as young people from BAME communities are just a few of the concerns they portrayed and highlighted. They had something to show off to their friends, family, and other young people after the three sessions. They had Kate Nicholl as well.

IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

Twelve young people collaborated on a dance and theater project throughout three sessions. The young people’s inherent talents were highlighted, and they displayed a great deal of ingenuity. They could add and remove as they pleased, which allowed them to have a high-quality final product.

While providing them with on-the-ground support, the facilitators let the youth take the initiative.

CAPABILITIES SHOWCASE

The brief production highlighted the young people’s natural abilities and capabilities.

CONFIDENCE

These little boys and girls radiated an incredible amount of confidence. In just three days, they were able to provide something amazing.
