Exploring identity-Visit to Derry

PROJECT: HI-M8

CATEGORY: STREET ART PROJECT

SPONSORED BY: BBC CHILDREN IN NEED

NUMBERS OF PARTICIPANTS:65

AIM

To use painting and art to convey the ideas and imagination of young people.

OVERVIEW

Picture a metropolis that has been altered by clever stencils that whisper stories on worn walls, vivid color splashes, and intriguing murals rather than tall structures.

This is the allure of street art, and it serves as a potent instrument for promoting mental health in young people, going beyond simple artistic expression.

Developing Confidence and Finding a Voice: When regular channels fail to provide young voices a chance to be heard, street art steps in to fill the void.

They can convey feelings, concepts, and experiences that words alone can find difficult to convey through strong brushwork and vibrant colors.

Through this creative outlet, they gain the ability to discover their voice and develop self-expression confidence.

Developing a sense of ownership: Young people have a sense of ownership over their environment when they participate in or co-create community art initiatives.

This creates a sense of belonging and connection to their surroundings, both of which are essential for mental health, particularly in this day of digital disconnection.
